DESCRIPTION:Teignbridge Taiko for Health and Wellbeing\nSaturday 4th January – Saturday 8th February 2025\n10.00 – 11.00am or 11.15am – 12.15pm\nThe Scout Hut\, Newton Abbot  \nThanks to a grant provided by Teignbridge Arts Project\, (more info here) Taiko South West are able to offer a six week taiko drumming course FREE for adults taking place in Newton Abbot town centre. \nWe will be running the free sessions over six weeks from Saturday 4th January – Saturday 8th February at the Scout Hut in Newton Abbot town centre. There will be two one hour sessions: 10am – 11am or 11.15am – 12.15pm and people can sign up for either. Ideally we’d like participants to be able to attend at least 4 of the 6 sessions as each week we’ll be building on what they’ve learnt so by the end of the six weeks participants can play something altogether. \nAt TSW\, time and time again\, we witness the benefits of taiko drumming for people’s mental health and wellbeing\, across ages\, gender and abilities. We are very excited that this funding opportunity is\, for the first time\, enabling us to run free taiko sessions in Newton Abbot\, specifically aimed at people using mental health & wellbeing organisations within Teignbridge. Taiko drumming is not only good brain gym\, but also quite physical so ultimately\, it’s a fun activity that requires focus\, providing participants with a welcome break from anything else that might be going on. \nThere are a few stipulations to meet the grant criteria\, \n\nPlaces are limited in each session so people will need to book in advance to avoid disappointment. To book they need to email hello@taikosouthwest.org.uk and let us know which session time and date they would like to attend. They also need to tell us which Teignbridge mental health and wellbeing service they are using\, or if they’re self-referring.\nParticipants must be 18 years +.\nParticipants must be from Teignbridge and be an active user of a mental health and wellbeing service\, or are self-referring as they know they’ll benefit from the sessions.\nThere is no need for any prior knowledge of drumming\, or music.\n\nThis project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK investing in communities and place\, supporting local business\, and people and skills. Blow those cobwebs away with this unique opportunity to re-energise\, re-charge and challenge yourself with something new. \nOur Day Retreats are the perfect way to escape. With no previous experience of taiko necessary\, these days are open to enthusiastic adults of all ages. Our day retreats begin with gentle stretches followed by a day of taiko drumming. DESCRIPTION:Katsugi Okedo Basics & Fundamentals Workshop\nWednesday 26th February\, 7.00 – 8.30pm\n£12 per person \nKatsugi okedos are drums which the player ‘wears’\, carried by a strap that hangs the drum at an angle in front of the player. It is a completely different way of playing taiko and this workshop will introduce participants to the basics & fundamentals of playing katsugi okedos.
